Making the bed would be so much less irritating if you just streamlined the number of steps. Here's our recommendation: Throw a single decorative pillow in front of the basic ones you sleep on and call it a day. Seriously, that's it. The secret to this setup is the type of pillow you use—a bitsy throw pillow will look awkwardly small here, so stick those in the living room. What you need is an extra-long (at least 36 inches, we'd say) bolster or lumbar pillow that dominates a good amount of the width of your bed. This ensures that your pared-down pillowscape comes across as a statement rather than a half-assed attempt at bed-making. (In case you're wondering, a bolster pillow is typically a cylinder, while a lumbar pillow is more likely a rectangle, although we find the terms are often used interchangeably.)
